White Birch Books was established by Donna Urey in 1992 and moved to its current location in 1997. Laura Lucy, a long-time employee bought the store in 2005, and currently runs it with the help of a small but dedicated staff including Barbara Drake, Karen Kovach, Karyl Chase and Jane Duggan. Although ownership may have changed, the goal of the store has remained constant: to promote and support a community of readers for locals and visitors alike.

When people walk through our door for the first time, we usually get one of two reactions. The first is, “Wow, I didn’t know this place was so big.” The second is, “How long have you been here – I’ve never noticed you before.” Although these comments seem contradictory, here’s the deal. We are set back from the road just that little bit, and because of our cute little front porch and tower, we look like a quaint little shop that might carry a corresponding number of quaint books. But once you come in, you’ll find that we are a full story and a half filled with books and carry a complete complement of all the latest bestsellers, hot reads and literary stars, as well as a comprehensive local section, a fantastic children’s department and a well-stocked, unique card department. In a nutshell – we’ve got it all!
